The machine is just a basic shampoo cleaner. It is a work horse design so you can't mess it up. The instructions are on the machine very clear to understand.
Buy the best carpet shampoo that you can afford. This is what makes the difference in how clean you get your carpets. I like Allergen. Go for a bottle of spot remover if you have a lot of spots it helps get those to at least lighten up if not disappear entirely.
The thing you want to do with the machine is put down a thin straight line of cleaner and then pull back to pick it up. The slower you make your strokes the cleaner the carpet.
